BERMONDSEY WALKING TOUR & THE POETRY OF LONDON EXPERIENCE

Saturday 25 July at 5pm

Experience London as a poem. Yes, a city as a poem may sound strange... but reading the verses of T.S. Eliot's THE WASTE LAND during a 2-hour walk at the sunset touching iconic sites such as St. Mary Woolnoth, London Bridge and St. Magnus the Martyr will be an opportunity to look at London with a poetic insight as well as an attempt to unveil the mysteries of the city using the poem as a guide.

THE WASTE LAND, published in 1922, was inspirational for successive generations of singers and song-writers including Pink Floyd and Genesis who saw London as a glistening place of alienation and loneliness.

Eliot’s influences came from the Medieval legend of the Holy Grail, which tells a tale of salvation from both physical and spiritual decay, from Baudelaire and Wagner, Shakespeare and Dante, the Bible and the Upanishads, through a variety of Western and non-Western traditions to end with the death-and-rebirth mythology.

This is not a literary walk: thanks to the inspirational reading of the poem, our challenges are to examine whether it’s still relevant after nearly a century of life and reveil the poetic layers of London.
